Social Media Etiquette
Due to the recent unfortunate events in New Zealand, my Social
Media Etiquette blog is on PewDiePie. PewDiePie is a Youtuber with
over 91 million subscribers, a net worth of over 20 million dollars and has
earned since 2014 over 65 million dollars on YouTube. PewDiePie, who
is not new to controversy, once again was recently brought into the spotlight.
On March 14th New Zealand had one of it is the
country's largest massacre. 50 people were killed and 50 more injured at two
mosques. Disturbingly, the shooter live-streamed this horrific event. During
his live stream, he stated, "“Remember, lads, subscribe to PewDiePie.”
This is about a previous meme created by PewDiePie.
PewDiePie responded, “Just
heard news of the devastating reports from New Zealand Christchurch. I feel
absolutely sickened having my name uttered by this person. My heart and thoughts go out to
the victims, families, and everyone affected by this tragedy.” His YouTube page
also contained a donation link to help the people of New Zealand.
Many
social media bloggers have posted on subreddits that PewDiePie is responsible
for the attack in New Zealand due to some of his previous comments and antics. The
New York Times reported, as of Thursday, there were two people arrested in New
Zealand for sharing the video. Facebook and other social media platforms also could face new
legal issues because of the video, and not only in New Zealand.
The Prime Minister of New Zealand has vowed
to investigate the role that
social media played in
the attack and to take action, possibly alongside other countries, against the
sites that broadcast it.
Given the situation, I'm not sure if I would
handle the response any different than PewDiePie. I would imagine that he is
feeling remorse to the events, but I don’t think he should be held responsible
for the great hatred and mental instability that this individual so clearly
demonstrated and acted upon. Perhaps, the shooter felt a connection to
PewDiePie because some of his videos were labeled anti-semitic. I can only guess.
Hello Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteSeeing Pewdiepie react too sensitive materials in an insensitive way shows his true colors. Although he tried to rectify his actions by raising donations, I still feel he should do more to assist the families affected.
Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteYour presentation really showed how words can affect people and how even if the person saying them tries to fix things, it doesn't always make their wrong right. I think your presentation was a great reflection of how we can and can't always fix a mistake especially when it comes to social media.
Although Pewdiepie attempted to show support for the victim’s families, I agree with Gregory that he could have taken stronger action to support them. It is important for youtubers and influencers to be kind to everyone since their following is so large.
ReplyDeleteHi Beatrice, I agree that I also would have not known what to do if I was in PewDiePie’s position. Terrorists attacks are very serious and scary, so for your youtube to be said by someone else during the event is shocking. I think PewDiePie handled the situation well and responded in a respectful manner. Great job!
ReplyDeleteBeatrice,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Audrey said about these youtubers and influencers being kind to everyone. They have such a large following and so much attention on them that they need to be careful with their words. It is important to remember that your social media presence is a direct representation of you.
Beatrice, your presentation on Pewdiepie was well done. I saw a lot of the buzz around the New Zealand’s attacks and the connection to PewDiePie but I didn’t know enough about it, so your presentation was informative. I agree that PewDiePie could have taken greater lengths to support the victims.
ReplyDeleteHi Beatrice!
ReplyDeleteI only had knowledge of the actual shooting so this is crazy news to me! I think the main priority after a shooting is to protect the victims of the actual shooting. So many died from the vicious terrorists attack. If you have such a large fan base thats exactly when you need to truly watch what you say and do!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI heard about this tragic event in the news but no idea it could have been due to Pewdiepie. I think you did a great job explaining the way that social media was misused. I never thought that social media could cause something that detrimental before but clearly it has the capability of doing just that. Great job overall!!
I like this explanation because it explains how truly important social media is and how badly its misuse can impact the world. I heard about this tragedy but had no idea about the relationship of social media until this presentation.
ReplyDeleteHi Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that there was any correlation between this tragic event and Pewdiepie! People really need to analyze what they say and how they act on social media because it obviously has a huge impact on people's lives!
Beatrice, Great presentation on a huge news story that just happened. I can't believe he was thrown under the bus for a terrible act. The only person that should be blamed for this is only the person who committed the terrible crime.
ReplyDeleteHey Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteI, personally, have never watched Pewdie pie because he seemed annoying and I am happy I never had because he seems like a bad person. That being said, people were blaming him partly for the tragedy in New Zealand which I don't think was right of them.
Hi Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend is a PewDiePie fan and he gave me some objective background on Felix (PewDiePie). It's very unfortunate that the murderers associated him with their actions, but Felix did his best to react to the tragedy. However, PewdiePie in the past did publish some very controversial content, with that he should have acknowledged that and tried to do more to help the situation.
Hello Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteIt is so unfortunate that PewDiePie had his name used in a video that was posted of a horrific event. I think that PewDiePie did the best thing by creating a link to a fund and stating his thoughts and apologies on the issue that he had no control over. These actions by the person recording the shooting should take responsibility for their actions.
Hey Beatrice!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting topic to focus on! I was not aware that this happened! Although he should not be blamed for the tragedy, I do think it was rather insensitive for him to do what he had. While it was never right, he did do the right thing by attempting to fix it by raising funds for those affected.
Hi Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteYour explaination was very well done. I was totally unaware of this incident. PewDie Pie did what others usually don't. He apologised and raised funds. He basically tried to fix what he could. I liked how you explained social media etiquette in your presentation.
Hi Beatrice,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job presenting and explaining the issue regarding the shooter and PewDiePie. It's sad that his name was muttered and he could not do anything about it. He was disturbed by this and raised funds for the families hurt by the tragedy. I honestly think he does not have bad etiquette, but I would just be careful when posting content and apparently being "prejudice against Jews." Thanks for sharing!
