App Smackdown - Square Payment Processing

Square Payment Processing is an easy and convenient way to provide customers with a mobile option for purchases. The app can be accessed by phone or via web. By opening an account and utilizing the appropriate payment square, purchases can begin. The app cannot only keep track of purchases, but can display graphs and invoicing, just to name a few. Below is a true story of how the Square Payment Processing app was used:
Colleen is a clay fanatic and spends her free time creating beautiful, glazed, gallery worthy pots, plates, bowls, cups, and vases. An art gallery gift shop can charge between 10% - 50% commission, depending on the gallery. The art gallery gift shop can use Square Payment Processing Point of Sale software to keep track of items sold, commission, employee time keeping and inventory.
Along with the gallery gift shop, Colleen decided to expand and sell her product at other venues, such as:  street fairs and/or outdoor art markets. Many people attend these functions with a specific cash dollar amount in their pocket or no cash, in an attempt to avoid impulse purchases. Colleen is smart. She knows that many people carry credit cards. She isn’t going to lose a sale and is determined to break through the “impulse purchase wall”. She proudly set a sign next to her displays, “Cash and credit cards are accepted”.  When a customer was ready to finalize a sale,  she presented her phone with the attached square reader. The customer swiped their credit card, signed for their purchase with a fingertip, and had the option of a digital receipt. The customers and Colleen were happy with the ease and convenience of their transactions.  When the day was all said and done, Colleen could review the history of the purchases completed, dollar amount and quantity of times sold from home using her personal computer.  I also plan to use this to subsidize my own personal endeavors.

  1. Hi Beatrice! This is such a helpful and interesting tool! There are so many times that I go to pop-up shops or outdoor markets and the vendors only accept cash. This is a great way for people to garner more customers because of the option of being able to pay with credit card as well. It's also very easy to use it seems like, it's small, convenient and very user friendly. I hope to see this more when I visit these outdoor markets in the near future!

  2. I have definitely seen people using this app at different times but I was never sure what the app was called exactly. I enjoyed the clarity you brought to this and the ease of information. This app is extremely useful for small business owners and individuals selling their products.

  3. Beatrice, Square Payment Processing sounds like such an important tool for pop-up businesses and small businesses! The record-keeping aspect must be so helpful to keep accurate records of employee sales and the convenience and electronic abilities make it a must-have for today's society of business!

  4. This tool can be utilized by small businesses. I think this is a great option for owners to have at shows and fairs, as it is more convenient for shoppers today. If I ever opened up a small business or sold my own products, I would definitely utilize this! I enjoyed reading the story you included!

  5. This is a new app to me, and I have never seen anyone using this. I like to way you provide a real-life example of how beneficial and convenient it is. You are not only giving an explanation of how the customer can make good use of it but also presenting elaboration on how the employer can be advantageous from this app. It seems able to boost the sales much by using this! I think you have the whole picture of how to apply it to your career field in the future, good luck!

  6. Beatrice,
Square Payment Processing is a great tool, and your presentation helped me to better understand how it works. I love spending my summers in Long Beach Island and they often have fairs or markets with a lot of vendors where this app becomes extremely useful.

  7. Hello Beatrice! After watching your presentation I was really surprised how easy it is to use a point of sale system like this right on your phone. I always thought that these devices cost a lot of money and that the software was complicated. This would be a great tool to utilize within the hospitality industry, similar to the tablet they have at Applebee's now, were you can pay right at the table through the tablet. I know some restaurant servers are being given Ipads to place orders right at the table and also use the Ipad for the customer to pay at the end. This is a great application that can be used in a lot of different settings!

  8. It was very interesting learning about this because I have gone to places using this little white box and I always wondered what app they used. I find this very beneficial for anyone trying to boost their business because it gives them the edge over their competitors. I noticed that some to most people prefer to use card over cash nowadays, so this Square Payment Process is perfect.

  9. Hello, Beatrice! I have seen Square used at farmer's markets and I have a reader myself. I used to sell makeup (although I was my best customer), but I got the reader for free in case anyone wanted to purchase directly through me. It seems pretty straightforward, however, I never had a reason to use it. I had no idea that Square Payment Processing Point of Sale software could be used to keep track of items sold, commission, employee time keeping and inventory. Do you believe that this app would work well in schools to accept payments for lunches and field trips? I find it a struggle to remember to log on to online accounts for my kid's lunch money and to remember to send in a check when needed. (Who carries checks these days, anyway, right?!)

  10. Hello Beatrice, really cool presentation! This application appears to be a very helpful tool that can be used by a broad amount of people. I have never heard of this app prior to this, but can see it becoming more popular as time goes on. I can see small businesses using this app to benefit customers.

  11. I have seen this app being used multiple times and never thought of it as being an app. This app and card reader is very cool, and can be extremely useful for entrepreneurs or anyone looking to sell something. The only problem I can see is people being weary of allowing others to swipe their card onto their phone. Another major competition would be Venmo and many other cash apps that allow money to be sent with no requirement of card swiping.

  12. Square Payment Processing and other apps are seeming to get more and more popular as I start to see them all the time. It seems like a ton of money apps are coming out all at the same time and they are all doing amazing. I wish I could have thought of something like this, I'd be making millions of dollars by now.

  13. This blogpost was very different from the others because you gave a real life example which was very interesting of you to put in! I think this is a great way to incorporate real life examples of how people could use this app. Can you explain to us how you would use this app yourself?

  14. Beatrice,
I love your presentation! I have used Square Cash before and liked it. I love how you gave examples of how you can use this daily and in real life. This would be an awesome app to use within a business. How would you use this app?

  15. Hi Beatrice! I agree that Square Pay is a convenient way for customers to pay for goods. In today’s world, most people do not carry cash. This app is great because it offers customers the use of their debit or credit card when shopping at small businesses, street fairs, flea markets, etc. Great job!

  16. Hi Beatrice, this app is extremely useful for multiple reasons. I would say the number one reason is for small businesses. From what I understand cash registers are expensive and annoying so this app just makes it easier for everyone in a world where people rarely carry cash around anyway.

  17. Hi Beatrice. I am bad with money, and businesses (hence me majoring in criminology). This app will be perfect for people who want to start a small business, but defiantly not for me! Allowing people to pay easily by using your phone and paying a small fee will be make it fast and less expensive. Really cool app I learned a lot from your smackdown!

  18. Now businesses can take credit cards in a simpler way or switch over from cash only payments. It is important to be able to take credit cards as a business owner in today's world were not as many people carry cash.

  19. Hi Beatrice!
This app is very beneficial for businesses. The best thing about this app is that it accepts credit cards or debit cards. I have never seen anyone use this app before but hopefully I do soon. I really enjoyed reading the short story you provided with the explanation of the app.

  20. Hello Beatrice,
Thanks for sharing this awesome app. I love how technology is advancing and becoming beneficial for people. Square Payment is such an easier way to handle transactions rather than going through the struggle of using a cash register. I have thought about owning a business as a physician in the future, so I will try to implement this in my facility. I would want all my patients to be as content as possible.
